Background
Air pollution in Barking and Dagenham has a significant and disproportionate impact on the local population. Research demonstrates that the borough was in the top five local authorities in London with the most deprived populations living among the worst air quality.
Knowledge about environmental challenges like air pollution, and solutions to those challenges, must be ‘co-produced’ by members of a community if they are to have the greatest chance of succeeding. This project is committed to providing an opportunity for residents and workers in the borough to help guide the solutions, areas of interest and direction of future resources to help improve and raise awareness about local air quality.
Contact
Please contact Dr. Kayla Schulte by email at kayla.schulte@imperial.ac.uk or call/text/whatsapp +44 7469 000 574 if you would like to contribute to the map using a paper copy mailed to your address with return postage, or verbally (over the phone).
Project aims
The aim of the project is to generate a clearer, fuller picture of local air quality conditions across the borough, while giving residents a chance to contribute directly to research that can help inform environmental policy. Another key aim is that the map is accessible to as many people in the borough as possible, and so we will be co-hosting a number of in-person events where people can contribute to the map on paper or verbally in person.
Project delivery plan
The Community Air Quality project will be delivered collaboratively by researchers at Imperial College London, the Project Ambassadors, the LBBD Office of Environmental Protection and is funded by the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra). The project map was launched in April 2023 and will remain open for contributions until January 2024. A final report highlighting areas that are important to residents when it comes to tackling air pollution will be made available and shared with LBBD local authority, local councillors and MPs, the London Mayor’s Office and the Defra.
Project goals
Short term
- Create a website where residents & workers across the borough can share their experiences, questions & concerns about air quality
- Hosting and attending in person events where people can contribute
- Build a more representative view of local air quality
- Gather contributions to the map
- Support awareness of air pollution, its sources and effects on health in the borough
- An opportunity contribute directly to research that can help inform environmental policy
Long term
- Improve air quality in the borough
- Preserve and expand green spaces (great co-benefits)
- Initiate resident-led government intervention to reduce air pollution
- Create opportunities for new projects that can help improve air quality in the borough
Project ambassadors
The Project Ambassadors are residents, professionals, students, and parents who live and work in the borough. They steer the appearance, name, goal, and outputs of this project. The Project Ambassadors help communicate about the project, take part in presentations and help co-host meetings to discuss local air quality.
